President Obama should tear up former Marine Matthew Hoh's resignation letter. Hoh is an American hero. Hoh is the first US official to resign in disgust over the Administration's wrong-headed course in fighting the Afghan war. He told Obama exactly what he needs to hear about Afghanistan: that the Afghan war is a failed, flawed, no-win war. That it's a sinkhole for billions of tax dollars and a death trap for hundreds, maybe thousands, of US troops. This is all to prop up a hopelessly corrupt, dope profiteering, unpopular regime. What does it mean when the most military-obsessed administration in our history, which, year after year, submitted ever more bloated Pentagon budgets to Congress, is succeeded by one headed by a president who ran, at least partially, on an antiwar platform, and who has now submitted an even larger Pentagon budget? What does this tell you about Washington and about the viability of non-militarized alternatives to the path George W. Bush took? What does it mean when the new administration, surveying nearly eight years and two wars' worth of disasters, decides to expand the U.S. Armed Forces rather than shrink the U.S. global mission?

What's the Afghan policy?

President Obama has said that the war in Afghanistan can't be won through military action alone. That said, he confused many in appointing Gen. Stanly McChrystal to take over as top commander of the growing US military force there, a man known for his leadership of a secret operations force said to have carried out regular assassination and torture. Paul Jay spoke to McClatchy Newspapers' Pentagon Correspondent, Nancy Youssef, to attempt to decipher Obama's strategy in this escalating conflict.
